Becker Marine Systems achieves its first direct order from a Japanese shipyard
At the beginning of September Becker signed a contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to supply rudders for four Ro/Ro carriers building for owner Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA. The rudders selected are 50sqm TLKSR® Rudders, each of which will be equipped with a Costa-type propulsion bulb designed by MHI. The resulting increased efficiency and reduced fuel consumption of the Becker twisted rudder and bulb was a deciding factor in the owner's selection.
The vessels will be the largest car carrier Ro/Ro vessels in the world, with a length of 265m, beam 32.2m and design draught of 11m. The design speed will be over 21 knots.

Successfull launching of new product Mewis Duct® on SMM 2008
Becker Marine Systems is looking back on a very successful exhibition participation with several highlights. At this year´s SMM the company presented a wide range of manoeuvring, communication and material handling solutions. The new booth with a full-size Flap Rudder on display in its center was very well received and attracted a lot of visitors. Outside of Hall A1 an original TLKSR® rudder with a size of 85sqm impressed the visitors with it’s weight of 88t and the astonishing dimensions of the world’s largest full spade rudder. The rudder is now being final machined and then shipped south-east to be fitted to a 13,000 TEU container vessel.
Becker’s Managing Director, Mr. Dirk Lehmann held a well attended press conference at the Becker booth, where Mr. Lehmann introduced the brand new Mewis Duct® and gave an overview of company news and product developments.
Meeting the demand for environmentally friendly and fuel saving solutions for ships, the Mewis Duct® attracted a lot of attention. The new product is a hydrodynamic fuel saving device for vessels with high block coefficient, such as tankers and bulkers. The Mewis Duct® combines a nozzle ring with four tailored fin blades. The system optimizes the inflow of the ship’s propeller, saving at least 4% of fuel for applicable newbuildings or retrofits. An amazing number of over 150 inquires for the Mewis Duct® with the product launch just a few days away has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations.
